The Men’s, Women’s, ISA Aloha Cup and Team Champions Will Be Crowned On Saturday

The stage is set for the Finals after an intense Day 7 of competition during the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games at the world-class pointbreak of Punta Rocas, Peru. On Saturday, the Open Men’s, Open Women’s, ISA Aloha Cup and Team Champions will be crowned.

Big shifts took place in the overall Team Points. Australia overtook the lead and Peru is now sitting in second. Argentina moved up to third followed by Costa Rica, Ecuador and South Africa.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre commented: “They say that all good things come to an end. Unfortunately, today is Day 7 and tomorrow is the Final Day. The waves were very nice and clean, we are expecting bigger waves tomorrow, so stay tuned for Final Day when the Champions will be crowned.”

On the Men’s side, Argentina’s Leandro “Lele” Usuna and Australia’s Shane Holmes have advanced to the Grand Final.

Usuna advanced in first earning a 15.34 and Holmes in second with a 13.50, sending Nicholas Squiers from Australia (11.74), and Santiago Muniz from Argentina (10.23), to the Repechage, where they will have one more opportunity to make it to the Final.

Squiers and Muniz will be joined by Costa Rica’s Anthony Fillingim and Peru’s Joaquin del Castillo in the Repechage. The first and second place finisher will advance to the Grand Final.

On the Women’s side, demonstrating solid performances all week long, Dominic “Mimi” Barona from Ecuador and Peru’s Anali Gomez will face each other for the Gold Medal.

During the Women’s Main Event Round 4, Barona advanced in first place with a total heat score of 16.84, followed by Gómez (8.77), sending to Repechage, Philippa Anderson from Australia (8.30) and Leilani McGonagle from Costa Rica (6.44).

Anderson and McGonagle will be joined by Jessica Grimwood from Australia and Nao Omura from Japan in the Repechage. The first and second place finisher will advance to the Grand Final.

During the Men’s Repechage, Peru’s Joaquin del Castillo was the standout of the day, advancing flawlessly to the last Repechage Round. The local favorite in both heats earned the highest total scores of the round, 15.17 and 12.17.

In the Women’s Repechage, Australia’s Jessica Grimwood was in great shape for the second day in a row and earned the event’s first perfect 10.

To finish off Day 7, the exciting ISA Aloha Cup Semifinals took place. The ISA Aloha Cup is a tag-team relay competition. Each team is made up of 3 Men and 1 Woman and every surfer is scored on two waves.

In Semi-Final 1, Peru came in first with a score of 45.37, Australia (33.63) came in second, eliminating Chile (26.69) and Mexico (24.12). In Semi-Final 2, Argentina came in first with a score of 41.35, South Africa (38.24) came in second, eliminating Costa Rica (35.30) and Ecuador (33.90).

Peru, South Africa, Argentina and Australia will battle for Gold in the ISA Aloha Cup Final on Saturday..
